The world's seventh-highest island, Taiwan lies some 120 km off the southeastern coast of mainland China, and has an area of 35,801 km2.
Taiwan is characterized by the
contrast between the eastern side, consisting mostly of mountains running in 5 ranges from the northern to the southern tip of the island,
and the flat western side. Taiwan's highest point is the Yu Shan 3,952 m. There are 5 other peaks over 3,500 m. |
