Southern Africa is the southernmost region of the African continent. Southern Africa has forests, grasslands and deserts. The region has both low-lying coastal areas, and mountains. Southern Africa is composed of 3 regions: an expansive central plateau, a continuous escarpment of mountain ranges that ring the plateau and a narrow strip of low-lying land. Most of the central plateau consists of high, rolling grassland. The highest points of the mountains are found in the Drakensberg Mountains, 3,050 m.
