Hiking is an outdoor activity, a form of walking on trails in wilderness areas, with the specific purpose of exploring and enjoying the scenery. Many beautiful places can only be reached overland by a hike, the best way to see nature.

Off-trail hiking in some places is called a cross-country hike. In the UK people would use terms such as hillwalking. Australians use the term bushwalking for both off-trail and on-trail hiking. New Zealanders use walking or bushwalking and the term tramping for overnight and longer trips. Hiking a long-distance trail from end to end is referred to as thru-hiking. In the mountains of India and Nepal is called trekking. In some parts of the world overnight hikes are called backpacking. Backpacking combines hiking and camping in a single trip, which involves spending one or more nights in the backcountry, and carrying supplies and equipment to satisfy sleeping and eating needs.

The tallest mountain on Earth is Mount Everest. The tallest mountain in North America is Mount McKinley, in South America is Aconcagua. For Africa the tallest is Kilimajaro. In Europe, the tallest mountain is Elbrus, in Antarctica Vinsin Massiff. In Oceania, Puncak Jaya is the tallest mountain.

There are volcanic, domed, folded, plateau, and fault-block mountains. Volcanic mountains are mountains that form when molten rock erupts onto the earth's surface. Domed mountains are formed when molten rock rises through the crust and push up the rock layers above it. Folded mountains are the highest mountains in the world. They form along converging boundaries, where two continents are colliding. Plateau mountains are large areas of flat topped rocks that have been lifted above the crust by converging continental plates. Fault block mountains are formed when parts of the earths crust has been broken off into large blocks. These are then lifted, then, faulting tilts these blocks.
